Kan't Enlightement
These days what I am craving for, is a bit of free time to sit in a coffee shop and read Immanuel Kant's Enlightenment article. I am halfway through reading it and I enjoy every word of it. Kant is one of the main philosophers behind modernism. Now that I am living in the West, I understand him better. When he says "Enlightenment is man’s emergence from his self-incurred immaturity" and emphasizes that “It is so convenient to be immature”, it’s like he is talking about the very basic rule of living in the West. Many of my immigrant friends have experienced the day when they realized that there isn't any help or guidence and they have to figur it out by themselves. Kant explains that in the process of enlightenment, “obedience” is very important to keep the society in order. Therefore "He must simply obey. But he cannot reasonably be banned from making observations as a man of learning on the errors..., and from submitting these to his public for judgement."
I really like to translate this article to Persian, because I think it has a lot to say about the situation that we Iranians are experiencing in general. But I don't want to make a promise that I can't deliver. For now, I highly recommend you to read the article in English.

Umberto Eco and my New Resolution
Last night I went to Umberto Eco's event. I loved his The Name of The Rose and I really wanted to see him. It was great! He was such a funny and wise man. With his Italian accent he managed to amuse the crowd and make them laugh. I got him sign his latest book for me. David Gilmour asked him if he anjoyed being famous, he said that he enjoyed being an old gentleman! I think it is a very profound answer.
Meeting with Umberto Eco brought me back with the idea that I have been developing lately about changing my life style a bit and spend more time on art and culture. It's been a long time since I haven't gone to movies regularly, haven't read books as much as I used to, haven't gone to opera, concerts, theatres, musicals. When I was in Iran, I was doing this and I was craving to have the opportunity to do more. Now, that I am here and there are all these moveis and theatres and concerts available, I barely take advantage of them. There are always excuses: busy work schedule, socializing, community activities, and reading about election in Iran!!!! I am not going to continue like this. I have to catch up. My immidiate resolution is to manage my life and put some time for cultural activities. This is hobby as well as education. I will try to regularly write about the stuff that I see and enjoy in my weblog.

Toronto in Summer
Right now it is raining which brings fresh air into the room. You can hear the delicate rainfall which mixes with the city sounds. Toronto is in summer. It is lovely, warm and humid. No worries of the hot, cause a little rain or even a shower chills it up. People are walking on colorful fashion. They look at you and smile nicely. You can wear light and beautiful clothing without the fear of cold. No heavy winter coat, no ice, no snow. Love is floating in the air and I feel it right in my heart.

Who knows...
who knows how trees blossom
who knows how flowers flourish
who knows how words touch hearts
who knows how hearts tie up
who knows how bodies smell like love
who knows how dreams come true
who knows how strangers feel so close
who knows how love blossoms the trees, flourishes the flowers and sparks in the eyes of the poeple who pass by...

Iranian women got into the staduim...
I just heard the news. Yesterday, a group of women with white scarves, tried to get into Azadi Stadium in order to watch the soccer game between Iran and Bahrain. According to IRI's rules, women don't have the right to get into Azadi Stadium for watching soccer. The gorup of 20 insisted to get in and faced with a little violence. Finally, the security guard let them in for the second half time. I congradualte this victory to all Iranian women.

Peggy Nicole
Today I saw a documentary about the life of the Canadian painter Peggy Nicole (1904-1949). The documentary started very powerful, then drained little by little, lost its intuitive spirit, fell into common rules of story telling. Apart from that, the subject matter was amazing. I was stunned by the sad and short life of this vigorouse, unconventional, and talented painter. Her paintings were so energetic and powerful. She had to fight with her close-minded mother who once burnt her paintings. She lived a Bohemian life depite her conservative environment. She lived poor and hungry and got hardly recognized for her art. However, she never stopped painting even when she couldn't afford buying colors. She was sort of a natural artist and hardly ever made money or gained recognition out of her amazing work. You could see some of her work at AGO and Natioanl Art Gallery of Ottawa.
In another level the documentary was reflecting the boring and relatively limited life that existed in Canada at the time. A kind of village mentality that still exists in small Canadian towns and cities. Without understanding this mentality we can not understand Canadian art, history and even democracy.
